The dangerous classes of New York and twenty years' work among them Charles Loring Brace 9781178265934 Books

This is a most interesting account, and it is rather disheartening to read so much that is still the case today. The writing style is at times the biggest hindrance to reading (it is good but old fashioned and hence noticeable), but that should not be a deterrent to anyone who wants to know about life and living conditions for society's unfortunates several decades ago.

The dangerous classes of New York and twenty years' work among them Charles Loring Brace 9781178265934 Books Reviews

Charles Loring Brace is little remembered today but he still left his mark on modern America by introducing the concept of foster homes for children. He created the Children's Aid Society and organized the Orphan Trains that took city children to live with western families. His charitable efforts brought him in contact with some truly wretched Manhattan neighborhoods. The infamous Five Points area appears here as does some other locations almost lost to history. Did you know that near prestigious Murray Hill was once squalid, crime-ridden Dutch Hill? Brace clearly favors native-born Protestants but can still occasionally praise the Irish, German, and Black residents that occupy the lowest rung of Nineteenth Century New York. He doesn't have much good to say about the local Catholic priests however... He criticizes child labor much more stridently though and urges that New York adopt the more enlightened laws of neighboring states and prohibit young people under fifteen from working more than sixty hours a week! The highlight of the book for me was the introduction of Orville ("Awful") Gardner, a hulking giant who gave up crime and found religion after his son's death. Somebody really needs to produce a book or even a movie about him!
