Messenger No 48 James Otis 9781492986508 Books

This author was recommended to me at the end of a Horatio Alger story. It features a young boy (14 years old) who is a messenger. While on a job he becomes involved albeit unwittingly in two criminals. When questioned by the authorities he ends up cooperating. Then he's kidnapped!

After a series of adventures that reminded me of some of the exploits from Horatio Alger stories, the mystery was solved. It involves murder, funny money (counterfeiting) and a traveling show. To me, the book felt like three of so Alger stories combined into one -- lots of Adventure but not a lot of substance.

Perhaps I'm judging too harshly. It is a okay book - just not one I'd want to read again. For the ten to twelve year old men-in-training though? Quite good.

Features detectives, bad-guys, railroads, Americana, printing presses (funny money) and more. And Messenger No. 48 is mostly about the boy who ferrets out the criminals. Guns too -- the 14-year old is considered responsible and indeed is so! I don't recall any references to prayers or religion. Nobody dies.
